Collapse ▲There’s good news for companies needing more time to implement the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Food Traceability Rule. The FDA recently announced their decision to extend the compliance date for this rule by 30 months – until June 20, 2028. This provides time for businesses to comply with what many in the industry have described as a complex rule.
The Food Traceability Rule establishes traceability recordkeeping requirements, in addition to those in existing regulations, for businesses that manufacture, process, pack, or hold foods included in the Food Traceability List (FTL). The ultimate goal of this rule is to reduce the number of foodborne illnesses and/or deaths through faster identification and expedited removal of potentially contaminated food from the market.
While the FDA had originally set a compliance date of January 20, 2026, the additional 30 months will allow businesses of all sizes more time to implement the complexities of this rule. More information on the extended compliance date is available on FDA’s website.
