Packaged foods containing ingredients from major food allergens must be clearly listed on the label to help protect consumers. On January 1, 2023, sesame joins the list of major food allergens making it the ninth food allergen recognized in the U.S. In November 2022, the FDA released a draft guidance (revision of previous edition) to help the industry comply with changes to labeling regulations.

As a refresher, when the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 was passed, eight major allergens accounted for 90 percent of food allergies and serious allergic reactions in the U.S. These food allergens include egg, milk, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and crustacean shellfish. FALCPA requires that foods or ingredients that contain a “major food allergen” be specifically labeled with the name of the allergen source. This law was passed to help consumers avoid food allergens.

On April 23, 2021, the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act was signed into law, declaring sesame as the 9th major food allergen recognized by the United States. The FDA has posted a video for more information about the FASTER Act which includes basic information about this Act and helps answer frequently asked questions from the food industry.
