FDA Provides Additional Time to Submit DUNS Number as Part of Facility Registration Renewal

— Written By

The FDA requires all registered food facilities (foreign and domestic) to renew their registration biennially in each even-numbered year. The current renewal period began in October 2020 and ran through December 31, 2020. It is important to note that there is a new component of facility registration renewal. Facilities are now required to provide a unique facility identifier (UFI). The FDA recognizes the DUNS number as an acceptable UFI for facility registration. DUNS stands for Data Universal Numbering System and is a unique 9-digit identifier provided by the credit bureau Dun and Bradstreet.

The FDA recognizes that there may be a delay in obtaining the number and allows registrants to enter “PENDING” in the UFI field of their registration if they anticipate that they will not be able to obtain a DUNS number before the conclusion of the 2020 biennial renewal period. Users will then have 90 days to obtain and submit a DUNS number to the FDA. Failure to update the registration with a valid DUNS number will result in the cancellation of the registration.

For more information, facilities are encouraged to review FDA guidance and their enforcement policy for 2020 facility registration. The following fact sheet may also be helpful in better understanding the new registration renewal requirement.
